In a year like no other, it was unclear if and how the Schooner Race would be held in 2020. But with the vision and hard work of our generous sponsors, participating vessels, and volunteer staff, GCBSR was able to rally and raise an amazing $66,928.89 to support the good work of GCBSR and our partner organizations. Thanks to all hands for their extraordinary effort!
With heartfelt thanks to all who have supported the
mission of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race
Total Raised $66,928.89
Lady Maryland supporting Living Classrooms Foundation - $18,217.74
Schooner Lady Maryland has been sailing the waters of the Chesapeake Bay since 1986, and is the flagship of the Living Classrooms Foundation. Since her launch, Lady Maryland has participated in nearly every Schooner Race and is the only vessel that carries students across the finish line. During the Race, students aboard Lady Maryland work side by side with the crew to stand watch, navigate, steer and handle sail.
On most days of the year, Lady Maryland can be found on the Patapsco River running day-sail programs with students from a variety of backgrounds and economic means. During Maritime Environmental STEM Voyages, students work together to trawl for marine life, perform scientific experiments and explore the commerce, history, natural resources, and ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay. This has been a challenging year, but Lady Maryland is proud to be serving local students in Baltimore and is looking forward to the introduction of a Virtual Field Trip in the Fall of 2020 and a sailing season in 2021.
The mission of the Living Classrooms Foundation is to disrupt the cycle of poverty and help our communities in Baltimore and Washington, DC become safer, stronger, and healthier. Funds raised for the Living Classrooms Foundation will support their efforts in education, workforce development, health and wellness, and violence prevention.

Norfolk Rebel supporting Elizabeth River Project - $17,115.38
“Tugantine” Norfolk Rebel is the world’s first (and only) sail-powered, schooner-rigged tugboat. The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race got its start when, in 1988, Captain Lane Briggs of the Norfolk Rebel challenged the Pride of Baltimore II to a race down the Bay. Now owned and operated by Lane’s son Steve Briggs, the Norfolk Rebel is still in many ways the heart and soul of the GCBSR.
Norfolk Rebel is racing on behalf of the Elizabeth River Project. ERP’s mission is to restore the Elizabeth River to the highest practical level of environmental quality through government, business and community partnerships.

Alliance supporting Watermen's Museum - $5,543.73
Schooner Alliance is a 105’ steel schooner built in 1995 in Florida. She is owned and captained by Greg and Laura Lohse of Yorktown Sailing Charters, LLC.
Alliance is sailing this year on behalf of The Watermen’s Museum, also based in Yorktown, VA. The museum’s mission is to demonstrate the role Chesapeake Bay Watermen, from pre-colonial to modern times, have played in the shaping of our nation. The museum hosts historical exhibits depicting military and civilian water craft and activities, the crafts and methods of their trade, and a look into the lives of the people that have worked and fought on the water. The museum also is the destination for educational field trips, running programs for hundreds of schoolkids every year. GCBSR has lent its support to the Watermen’s Museum’s summer camp programs – sponsoring children in need of financial assistance and the families of military members and first responders.
The Alliance and the Watermen’s Museum have been longtime partners. Alliance is often seen bringing kids from the summer camp program out on the water, or having a cannon battle with the camp’s shore battery.

Woodwind supporting GCBSR Education Program - $5,447.35
Schooner Woodwind was built to make sailing dreams come true back in 1993 by the Kaye family. For the past 27 years, guests from all over the world have sailed on her for public cruises, private events, multi-day cruises and educational cruises. Just 5 years later her sister, Woodwind II, set sail. Woodwind II is the “movie star” of the family – she played an important role in the movie Wedding Crashers. But it’s the classic Woodwind that sails every year in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race – and she’s known to be a fast competitor!
This year, Woodwind is working in partnership with GCBSR’s education program to host educational programs aboard the vessel. Donations to Woodwind‘s campaign will be used to provide sailing experiences free of charge to local youth. Offering programs in STEM and navigation, Woodwind helps kids experience the magical Chesapeake Bay under full sail.

We can help. These are our families. These are the children and families who depend on the Bay for their livelihoods. These are the children who are going to be taking care of our Bay in the future. They should not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Maryland Food Bank is trying to change that. Team Adventure asks for your donations to help our MD families.
Thank you for your help and support!

Pride of Baltimore II - $1,728.23
Pride of Baltimore II is an icon. For more than 30 years, she has sailed to promote historical maritime education, foster economic development and tourism, and represent the people of Maryland in ports throughout the world. Since her commissioning in 1988, Pride II has sailed over 275,000 nautical miles and visited more than 200 ports in 40 countries.
The history of Pride II is entwined with that of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. In 1988, when the City of Baltimore launched her, Captain Lane Briggs of the Tugantine Norfolk Rebel challenged Pride II to a race from Baltimore to Norfolk, reviving a historic rivalry between schooners, captains, and cities on the Bay. With the challenge accepted, the Schooner Race was born.
Pride II is sailing on behalf of the nonprofit Pride of Baltimore, Inc., which owns and manages the ship. The organization relies on individual donations, corporate philanthropy, and grants to keep the Pride of Baltimore II sailing and serving the people of Maryland, year after year.

Celebration supporting Richardson Maritime Museum - $1,125.73
Celebration is hull number 17 in the Ted Brewer-designed Lazy Jack 32 series of fiberglass production schooners. Built in 1977 by the Ted Hermann Boat Shop in Long Island, NY, she was originally sold to John Kendall in Media, Pennsylvania, as a sail-away kit boat. In the GCBSR she took third in her class in 1999, placed third in 2002 in a fleet of 15 that endured high winds for 12 hours, and in 2004 she placed third. She changed hands in 2007, but is still located on the Chesapeake Bay. Her current owner, Paul Schaub, is a long-time volunteer for the race.
Celebration is raising money this year for the Richardson Maritime Museum in Cambridge, Maryland. The Museum was founded in memory of Capt. James B. Richardson, a prominent local boatbuilder. “Mr. Jim’s” dedication to the traditional wooden boatbuilding skills and to passing on those skills to new generations of boatwrights inspired the founders of the Museum to establish an organization dedicated not just to preserving his memory, but to continuing his efforts at keeping the art of wooden boatbuilding alive. The Museum, along with the Ruark Boatworks and the Brannock Education and Research Center, is dedicated to “preserving and promoting the boat building heritage of Dorchester County and the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland.”

Summer Wind supporting Blue Water Baltimore - $557.41
Summer Wind is a 48′ steel-hulled Colvin Gazelle schooner doing public tours and private charters in Baltimore. She does five trips each day, including a History Sail that teaches about the maritime history of Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay; afternoon Harbor Sails with lots of beach music from Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett and many others; the Sunset Sail with the city skyline; and the popular Wine & Cheese Sail in the evenings. Known as The Small Tall Ship, Summer Wind is the only schooner in the world with its own radio station.
In 2020 Summer Wind is sailing to raise funds for the nonprofit Blue Water Baltimore. Blue Water Baltimore’s mission is to restore the quality of Baltimore’s rivers, streams and Harbor to foster a healthy environment, a strong economy and thriving communities. For too long, Baltimore’s waterways have been plagued by trash, toxins, sewage, and polluted stormwater. These problems do more than harm our environment; they threaten the health and well-being of our residents, communities, and local businesses. Blue Water Baltimore works to change this. Through advocacy, education, monitoring and hands-on community work they strive to improve the watershed in Baltimore and across the Chesapeake Bay.
Blue Water Baltimore’s mission is especially important to the crew of Summer Wind. All of the crew come from the tall ship community, where sailing is a way of life. They consider themselves stewards of the waterways and feel responsible for repairing and maintaining the sea. Both Summer Wind and Blue Water Baltimore understand that we don’t just play on the Chesapeake Bay; we live here, too. And we have a responsibility to care for this special place.
