The 29th Annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race
from Baltimore, Maryland to Portsmouth, Virginia
October 9-14, 2018
Please join us — as a sailor, sponsor, volunteer or spectator — to make the 29th annual GCBSR, another great event for all involved! Until then, we wish you fair winds and smooth sailing!
The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (GCBSR) was founded to promote public awareness of the Chesapeake Bay’s maritime heritage and encourage the preservation and improvement of the Chesapeake’s natural resources. We accomplish this goal in part by donating the proceeds of the race to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, an organization working to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. To date, $172,624 has been donated to support the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Oyster Recovery Project, the Portsmouth Riverkeepers and others.
The race begins in Baltimore, Maryland, and ends 118 nautical miles down the Chesapeake Bay in Portsmouth, Virginia. Entry is open to all schooner-rigged vessels. Thirty-one schooners participated in the 28th annual race. The race and all race week activities are run by volunteers and donations keep the race going strong.
